Ellie is a character in the video game series The Last of Us by Naughty Dog, She is portrayed by Ashley Johnson through motion capture and voice acting ; in the television adaptation, she is portrayed by Bella Ramsey, In the first game, The Last of Us (2013), Joel Miller is tasked with escorting a 14-year-old Ellie across a post-apocalyptic United States in an attempt to create a cure for an infection to which Ellie is immune.
While players briefly assume control of Ellie, the artificial intelligence primarily controls her actions. Ellie reappeared as the playable character in the downloadable content prequel The Last of Us: Left Behind, in which she spends time with her friend Riley, In The Last of Us Part II (2020), players control a 19-year-old Ellie as she seeks revenge on Abby for Joel’s death.
Ellie was created by Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley, the directors of The Last of Us, Inspired by a mute character proposed for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, they created her as a strong female character who has a close relationship with Joel; throughout the first game’s development, the relationship between Ellie and Joel was the central focus.
- Johnson inspired aspects of Ellie’s personality, prompting Druckmann to make her more active in fighting hostile enemies.
- Following comparisons to the likeness of Canadian actor Elliot Page, Naughty Dog redesigned Ellie’s appearance to better reflect Johnson’s personality and make her younger.
- For her performance in Part II, Johnson considered her own experiences with anxiety and researched the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder,
The character has been well-received by critics, with Ellie’s relationship with Joel most frequently the subject of praise. The strength and complexity of her character, and its subversion of the damsel in distress stereotype, have also been commended.
- A scene in which Ellie and Riley kiss in Left Behind drew social commentary and was commended as a leap for LGBT representation in video games.
- Johnson’s performance in Part II was praised for her depiction of vulnerability and suffering.
- Both the character and performance received numerous awards and nominations, and have regularly placed favorably in polls and lists.
Ramsey’s performance in the television series has been similarly praised.

How old is Ellie in the end of Last of Us 2?
Ellie is 14 years old in The Last of Us TV show, while Bella Ramsey is 19 in real life. In the first game, Ellie is also 14, and in The Last of Us Part 2, she’s 19 years old.
How old are Ellie and Abby in The Last of Us 2?
Protect whoever plays Abby at all costs – Naughty Dog Currently, there is no official announcement of who will be portraying Abby in further seasons of “The Last of Us.” However, let’s point out that whoever winds up playing Abby will unfortunately need to have the thickest skin in the industry.
- Abby’s character was the subject of a loud, misogynistic backlash.
- Bailey, Druckmann, and even regular Naughty Dog employees would become the subjects of internet harassment.
- The HBO show has already been through quite enough public controversy as well, as there has been bigoted backlash over the numerous LGBTQ+ characters within the series.
The third episode of Season 1, “Long, Long Time” de-rails the main plot to tell a bittersweet love story between Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett). It was review-bombed by trolls, and it’s saddening to see a series with such a central core of love and empathy be misinterpreted for the scum of the internet.
Bella Ramsey, thankfully, is unbothered by the backlash, But still, the vitriol against the character of Abby and “The Last of Us Part II” continues to this day, and it would be in HBO’s best interest to not take it lightly. It was recently discussed that the story of “Part II” would be tackled in numerous seasons, rather than the first game’s approach to do it in one season.
As exciting as that is, let’s also hope that there’s a plan to protect both Ramsey and whichever fresh talent gets cast as Abby Ellie and Abby are two sides of the same coin; vengeance and redemption, hate and love, an eye for an eye — but they also represent some of gaming’s most complex and well-realized female video game protagonists.
How old is Ellie in The Last of Us 3?
This article is about the character from the HBO series, For her appearance in the video game series, see Ellie Williams,
“ | I know you mean well. I know you want to protect me. You have. And when we’re done, we’ll go wherever you want. Tommy’s. sheep ranch. the moon! I’ll follow you anywhere you go. But there’s no halfway with this. We finish what we started. ―Ellie’s declaration to Joel. | “ |
Ellie Williams is a main character in HBO ‘s The Last of Us, She is a 14-year-old orphan in post-apocalyptic America that has been ravaged by the Cordyceps brain infection, to which she is immune. In hopes of creating a vaccine, Marlene tasks Joel Miller with smuggling her out of Boston to the Fireflies.
How old is Dina in The Last of Us 2?
But Part 2 is five years later, so those numbers may work, especially if she looks younger, as I believe Dina is supposed to be around 20 or 21 in the game.
Who is Ellie’s ex?
Cat is a character mentioned in The Last of Us Part II who lives with her family in the Jackson community. She is Ellie ‘s ex-girlfriend, and the one who gave Ellie her tattoo.
How is Ellie immune?
So how does Ellie’s immunity actually work? – It’s not until halfway through the finale that we learn how this unusual birth affected Ellie physically. After finally making it to the Fireflies’ hospital base in Salt Lake City that’s been their destination all along, Joel wakes to find Marlene standing over him.
Ellie, he’s told, is already being prepped for surgery — and the Firefly doctor believes he knows why she’s immune. “Our doctor, he thinks that the cordyceps in Ellie has grown with her since birth,” Marlene explains. “It produces a kind of chemical messenger. It makes normal cordyceps think that she’s cordyceps; it’s why she’s immune.
He’s going to remove it from her, multiply the cells in a lab, produce those chemical messengers.and then we can give it to everyone. He thinks it could be a cure, Joel.” So in a similar way to how a vaccine introduces a small quantity of a disease into a person so they can develop the antibodies to fight it, it sounds as though Ellie already has her own, dormant version of cordyceps — and it’s stopping her from catching the form that turns people into killing machines.
- The problem? Cordyceps takes over the brain, so Ellie’s involvement in developing a cure requires her sacrifice.
- Do we know this is exactly how Ellie’s immunity works, for a fact? No, because the surgeon who would have removed Ellie’s brain is permanently stopped in his tracks by Joel.
- But it certainly sounds viable enough.
The problem is, if the Firefly doctor is right, Ellie’s brain could literally hold the cure for cordyceps. But while she’s still alive, humankind won’t be able to access it. Why is Abby so buff?
8 Abby Is So Muscular Because The WLF Has Large Gyms – A lot of fans have called into question how Abby could have become so muscular in a post-apocalyptic world since there would realistically be a lack of time to lift weights and do other muscle-building exercises. However, the reason that Abby is so muscular is because the WLF has trained her for years, and fans will even see large gyms at the beginning of Abby’s segment of the game.
Who is Ellie kissing in Last of Us 2?
The Last Of Us : the meaning of that kiss between Ellie & Riley in the video game – Riley is an important presence in Ellie’s life in the video game The Last Of Us, She meets Ellie in Boston’s quarantine zone, and they quickly become best friends. Riley’s adventures are mainly depicted in the video game The Last Of Us – Left Behind, published in 2014, one year after the first The Last Of Us,
Left Behind represents the prequel of The Past Of Us Part I, and its events take place three weeks before Ellie meets Joel in the main storyline. Riley is Ellie’s roommate in the military boarding school of Boston’s quarantine zone. However, Riley strongly criticizes how the quarantine zones are managed and escapes, becoming a Firefly.
After six weeks away, Riley will return to Ellie and take her to the abandoned mall that we see in Episode 7 of the series. The reason why Riley brings Ellie to the mall is that she has to tell her something important: she has to leave Boston, and she wants Ellie to come with her (although she didn’t actually receive permission from the fireflies about that).
- That night at the mall represents an experience Riley wanted to give Ellie to celebrate the intensity of their relationship.
- The kiss between Riley and Ellie represents a crucial moment in their story.
- While they are dancing, Ellie stops and asks Riley not to go.
- Riley thinks about it for a moment, then breaks her firefly pendant and drops it on the floor, symbolizing that she decided to leave the fireflies and stay with Ellie.
At that moment, Ellie kisses Riley. You can watch the scene from the video game in the video below. The Last of Us: Left Behind – Ellie & Riley Kiss Scene ** SPOILERS ** TRUE-HD QUALITY The kiss has been considered a breakthrough moment in the history of video games,
- As articles like this and this show, it represented the peak of an intense, emotional story between two girls, giving a meaningful dimension to their characters.
- It’s also Ellie’s first kiss and the first moment of her life when she feels another girl returns her feelings.
- As the series’ creators explained, the kiss represents the happiest moment for Ellie at that moment, and it’s immediately followed by the worst tragedy: the attack of an infected who will bite Ellie and Riley.
After discovering that they were bitten, their world crumbles. Ellie reacts with anger, whereas Riley cries, feeling the loss of what she had. The way Riley explains their options is taken from the video game, and it’s full of meaning: “Way I see it, we got two options.
- One, we take the easy way out.
- It’s quick and painless.
- I’m not a fan of option one.
- Two, we fight.
- There are a million ways we could’ve died today.
- And a million ways we could die before tomorrow.
- But we fight for every second we get to spend with each other.
- Whether its two minutes or two days we don’t give that up.
I don’t want to give that up. My vote? Let’s just wait it out. You know, we can be all poetic and just lose our minds together.” Her philosophy is: let’s live the best out of our last moments together. Let’s enjoy these moments and fight together, in the name of what we feel for each other.
The video game doesn’t show what happens next, but from the story of The Last Of Us, we understand that Riley will become infected, whereas Ellie will discover she’s immune. This will lead Ellie to Joel, who will bring her to Wyoming and see if a vaccine can be created from her. But the meaning of the relationship between Riley and Ellie is what will motivate Ellie to take care of Joel after he’s stabbed: Riley taught Ellie that we should always fight for the people we love, even in front of a certain death,
And that’s what prevents Ellie from running away from Joel after he asks her to. Joel is the most important person in Ellie’s life in that moment, and she has to fight every moment until the end. Even if death will come, she just cannot leave him. Discover other movies and TV shows explained on Auralcrave
Will there be the last of us Part 3?
Contents – Naughty Dog Ellie lets Abby (pictured) live in TLOU II’s emotional conclusion. In January 2023, the creator of Part 1, and creative director of Part II, Neil Druckmann, addressed the possibility of Part 3 during a stating: “Our process is the same thing we did when we did, which is if we can come up with a compelling story that has this universal message and statement about love — just like the first and second game did — then we will tell that story.
If we can’t come up with something, we have a very strong ending with and that will be the end.” Article continues after ad In April 2021, Neil Druckmann, Creative Director of Part II, officially confirmed that he has penned a story outline for a third game. However, it’s not in active development. Neil Druckmann tells Script Apart podcast that the plot & story for “The Last of Us Part 3” is already done, but the game is not in developmentyet.
— Dexerto (@Dexerto) According to, a credible leaker of information, Naughty Dog are actively working on several projects at the minute, including The Last of Us Part III: “The outline of the script is ready, but the studio is engrossed in the development of the aforementioned projects.” Article continues after ad Confirming what we already knew, however, they go on to say: “It is possible that development will begin faster than expected due to studio’s expansion.” The Last of Us Part III Nothing but official statements from the studio, the outline of the script is ready, but the studio is engrossed in the development of the aforementioned projects.
- It is possible that development will begin faster than expected due to studio’s expansion.
- Oops Leaks (@oopsleaks) It seems inevitable that a third game would pick up on Ellie’s story, perhaps revolving around her relationship with Dina.
- Abby’s involvement would not be guaranteed, but Ellie could yet change her mind over her merciful behavior at the end of Part II.
The very fact that Druckmann has taken the time to plot the third installment is very good news for the series’ fans. In fact, in an interview with the ahead of the tv series’ premiere, Druckmann again teased that a third installment could be on the way.
What is Ellie’s last name?
This article is about the character from the video game series, For her appearance in the HBO series, see Ellie Williams (HBO series), Ellie Williams is the central character of The Last of Us series, She serves as the protagonist of The Last of Us: American Dreams, the playable deuteragonist of The Last of Us, and the playable protagonist of both The Last of Us: Left Behind and The Last of Us Part II,
Ellie grew up as an orphan in the Boston quarantine zone and attended a military preparatory school, where she met and befriended Riley Abel, When Ellie was fourteen, the pair were both infected with the Cordyceps brain infection, where Ellie discovered she was immune. A friend of her mother’s and the leader of the Fireflies, Marlene, believed that she was the key to reverse engineering a vaccine.
Marlene tasked Joel Miller, a smuggler, with escorting Ellie outside of the QZ. The simple drop-off turned into a year-long journey across America, and the two eventually formed a close bond. Upon reaching the Fireflies in Salt Lake City, Joel learned that only killing Ellie could create the cure.
Refusing to allow this, he killed the head surgeon and escaped with Ellie to settle down in Jackson, his brother’s community in Wyoming, For the next four years, Ellie came to resent Joel for saving her life. In 2038, Abby Anderson, a former Firefly and the surgeon’s daughter, found and killed Joel.
Ellie vowed revenge and pursued Abby to Seattle, Her efforts were fruitless, leading her to retire on a farm with her girlfriend Dina and her son JJ, Unable to forgive Abby, Ellie abandoned her family and pursued her once again to Santa Barbara, only to spare Abby in the end.
Why is Ellie special?
This Last of Us article contains spoilers. In The Last of Us, both the HBO series and the video game that it’s adapted on, the Cordyceps brain infection has destroyed the world as we know it. There is no cure for anyone who becomes infected, and they succumb to the mind-controlling fungus within a couple of days.
- As far as we know in both the game and the show, Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey in the series) is the only person who has been exposed to Cordyceps and not turned into a flesh-eating monstrosity.
- While The Last of Us Part I does give some background on Ellie’s immunity, the game doesn’t tell us much about how it actually works or why Ellie is immune when so many others aren’t.
However, HBO’s The Last of Us expands on this important part of the game’s lore in the season finale, just as the series has done with other game elements throughout the season, Episode 9, ” Look for the Light,” begins with a tense opening sequence.
A pregnant woman named Anna (played by the original Ellie actor from the games, Ashley Johnson) is running from infected while going into labor. She comes across an abandoned farmhouse, where she fights off the infected alone as the baby is being born. Anna realizes that she has been bit in the leg just as she’s given birth, so she cuts the umbilical cord as soon as she can.
Even though she cuts the cord immediately after realizing she’s been infected, it turns out that there are still traces of Cordyceps that pass from Anna to the baby, who she names Ellie. However, we don’t know that for sure until Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie make it to the Fireflies in Salt Lake City.
- After Joel and Ellie are attacked, Joel wakes up in a hospital room with Marlene (Merle Dandridge), who explains to him what their doctor’s tests on Ellie’s immunity have uncovered.
- Marlene tells Joel that the doctor “thinks that the Cordyceps has grown with Ellie since birth” and that it “produces a kind of chemical messenger” that makes “normal Cordyceps think that she is Cordyceps.” She’s immune because, even when Ellie is bitten or otherwise exposed, the Cordyceps that enters her body already thinks that she’s infected.
In order to create a cure, Marlene says that the doctor is going to remove the Cordyceps from Ellie’s brain, “multiply the cells in a lab,” and reproduce the chemical messengers to give to everyone. In The Last of Us Part I, the player can find a recording from the doctor that gives insight into Ellie’s immunity, just as Marlene’s conversation with Joel does in the show.
However, in this recording, the doctor says that he is “uncertain” why Ellie is immune. As far as we know in the game, Ellie’s bite at the Boston mall was her first exposure to Cordyceps, and her immunity is presented as more of a miraculous reaction to that than a result of essentially being born with Cordyceps already in her system.
In the game, Ellie also has malignant fungal growth in her brain that has to be removed to be studied, but the recording doesn’t mention chemical messengers or how long the fungus has been in her system. Instead, the doctor just talks about how Ellie’s blood tests and MRI’s don’t match what he typically sees in an infected person.
- Because we don’t know exactly why Ellie is immune in the game, it seems more likely that there could still be others out there who are immune, or whose immunity could be revealed later on.
- In the show, however, Ellie’s immunity is caused by such unique timing with regards to when her mom was bitten, when she was born, and when the umbilical cord was cut that it truly positions her as the miracle cure for Cordyceps – making Joel’s decision to save her even more devastating.
I may not be an expert in statistics or mycology, but even I can predict that the odds of other children being born under the same or similar circumstances with the exact same result aren’t going to be that high, even with all of the infected running around.
Did Joel think of Ellie as a daughter?
1 Joel Kept Ellie Out Of Harm’s Way – At the beginning of The Last of Us, Joel reluctantly took Ellie’s responsibility because he’d struck a deal with Marlene. However, this no longer was the case by the end of the series. He genuinely began to see her as his daughter, and for the same reason, kept her out of harm’s way.
Who got Dina pregnant?
Events of The Last of Us Part II – A few days after the end of Dina and Jesse’s relationship, there is a celebration in a church within the settlement. Dina dances with a man from the group, as Jesse and Ellie look on. She invites Ellie, who is drinking at the bar, to dance with her. Dina protects Ellie from a clicker. The day after, Dina and Ellie are assigned to patrol the creek trails, the route which Dina had previously covered with the late Eugene Linden, While on patrol, they talk about their respective previous relationships with Cat and Jesse, the cheesy action films Joel enjoys, and their dreams of traveling to different places.
“Ellie. You go. I go.” After a while, Jesse arrives at the library looking for them; he tells them that Joel and Tommy didn’t arrive at the lookout as scheduled, and they decide to go look for them, taking different directions. When Dina arrives at the hunting lodge, she finds Joel’s corpse and an unconscious, beaten Ellie.
The next morning, Dina is present as Ellie is mourning over Joel’s grave. She remarks that Maria locked down the stables following Tommy ‘s departure, which could hinder their plans for leaving. Ellie tells Dina that she shouldn’t feel obligated to travel to Seattle, However, Dina assures Ellie that it is her choice.
She accompanies Ellie to Joel’s house to pick up his watch and revolver, where they are questioned by Maria over their plans for leaving Jackson, Alongside Ellie, she promises to help bring Tommy home safely. Dina and Ellie find Leah dead. Halfway through Dina and Ellie’s mission to avenge Joel’s death, Dina reveals she is pregnant with Jesse’s child. This puts a strain on their relationship. As such, Dina stays behind in the theater the pair have established as a hideout, telling Ellie to try to find Tommy in the neighborhood of Hillcrest,
Before Ellie leaves, Dina gives her a bracelet to wear. Hours later, Ellie returns with Jesse. However, she also has a lead about reaching Abby at the Lakehill Seattle Hospital, She leaves Jesse behind with Dina while she departs to continue her crusade. When Ellie returns, she has learned that Abby is hiding at the aquarium, but she is covered in blood and shaking.
Dina helps wash the blood off, and Ellie—traumatized at having tortured Nora—confesses she doesn’t want to lose Dina. The next day, Ellie and Jesse leave the theater to look for Tommy, and return with him several hours later. Ellie then lays by Dina’s side backstage, watching her struggle with her fever, before leaving to check on Tommy and Jesse in the theater hall.
Soon after, Abby finds their location, shoots Tommy, kills Jesse, and then engages Ellie in a fight. Finding Abby beating Ellie, Dina runs up to Abby, tackles her, and slashes her with her knife. However, Lev shoots Dina in the shoulder, allowing Abby to gain the upper hand and knock Dina out. Ellie pleads with Abby to spare Dina, revealing the latter is pregnant.
Abby, however, says “Good” and prepares to slit Dina’s throat. Lev calls out to Abby, leading her to come to her senses and spare Dina. Afterward, Dina, Ellie, and Tommy return to Jackson. Dina reveals to Ellie she is pregnant. Almost a year later, Ellie and Dina live on a farm with Dina’s son JJ, While Ellie carries JJ around the farm, Dina washes the dishes and hangs the clothes on a washing line. Ellie puts on some music and the trio dance to it before Dina pushes her off and insists she has to put out the laundry.
While doing so, Dina tells Ellie to put the sheep back in the barn so they can eat. However, in the process of rounding up the sheep, Ellie has a traumatic flashback to her being unable to save Joel at the moment of his death. Hearing her screams, Dina rushes to the barn to console Ellie and calm her down.
Sometime later, Tommy visits Dina and Ellie. Despite his lost mobility and eyesight, he is happy the pair are doing well. However, he reveals he actually came to ask the pair to pursue Abby again, having narrowed down her location. Dina insists the pair are done with that, to which Ellie hesitantly agrees.
Angered, Tommy berates Ellie and storms out. Giving JJ to Ellie, Dina pursues Tommy and demands he never comes back to talk about Abby again. Tommy tells her to save it and rides off. That night, Ellie stays up thinking about Joel. By early morning, Dina comes downstairs to find Ellie packing her bag to leave.
She asks Ellie to come back to bed, but Ellie reveals she has to go kill Abby; she believes it will end her PTSD and enable her to eat and sleep again. Despite Dina’s pleas, Ellie leaves for California, and Dina decides to take JJ and abandon the farm.
Is Ellie in love with Dina?
Canon – A few days after Dina’s break up with Jesse, there is a celebration in a church within the settlement. Dina dances with a man from the group, as Jesse and Ellie look on from afar. Dina later invites Elli to dance with her. Dina gets really close to Ellie, so Ellie tells her to be careful, as people are watching.
Dina says those boys should be terrified of Ellie because she has more of a chance with Dina than they do, so Ellie says that she’s just a girl, not a threat. At that moment, Dina kisses Ellie. But their moment gets cut by a homophobic man that tells them that they’re on “a family event.” Ellie and Dina meet for the first time after the kiss they shared when they go on patrol together.
Their interaction is very awkward. Both of them were fidgeting with their hands and avoiding direct eye contact. They both stumble over each other’s words (Dina is even nervously sarcastic about it) and neither addresses the actual kiss they shared previously.
- The tension breaks when Ellie is hit by a snowball from off-screen.
- Dina’s first reaction is to defend Ellie and their similarities start showing as soon as they start fighting back, with similar use of language and tone.
- After they seem to be a bit more comfortable around each other, the both of them go on patrol together, alone.
Ellie and Dina are riding horses down a peaceful creek trail and their dialogue immediately turns to discussing relationships. The both of them share a bit about their past relationships (Dina with Jesse and Ellie with Cat). Ellie wonders how come they never talked about their past relationships, while Dina tells her that Ellie never shared about Cat with her either.
Both are nervous, overthinking, and worried. The rest of their patrol is filled with awkward compliments and attempts to flirt, mostly from Dina. As well as attempts to setup a romantic moment or strangely timed compliments about how nice Ellie looks. From reading back in Ellie’s journal to her reactions to Dina’s advances, it’s confirmed that Ellie is attracted to Dina and that she is wise to her attempts at flirting, but fears ruining their friendship.
Eventually, they end up exploring a small abandoned neighborhood. They talk about how mundane this patrol really is, talking about what they are doing later that night. They also discuss movies and Dina tries to schedule more alone time with Ellie later.
Next, the two of them enter the first major combat encounter of the game where Ellie and Dina clear a strip mall and supermarket of infected. And here’s where Dina saves Ellie’s life, twice. This makes the two of them grow even closer together. As they leave, they find themselves in a blizzard and they make a desperate attempt to find shelter.
While Ellie almost gets lost, they both eventually find themselves to safety in an old library. They are trapped by a storm, relatively safe from infected and coming down off some intense emotional highs. As Ellie and Dina make their way through the library they discover that it is where a previously mentioned character, Eugene, must have had his own sanctuary.
As they explore and discover Eugene’s underground marijuana farm, Ellie and Dina eventually find some functioning marijuana to enjoy and their conversation quickly leads to the obvious, their own budding relationship. Dina turns the conversation to their previous kiss, as she bites the bottom of her lip and they share some nervous smiles.
Dina asks Ellie to rate the kiss they had and Ellie is hesitant and nervous to do so at first. So they share some bickering, getting closer and closer to each other, until they finally share a passionate kiss, going for something even more passionate.
- Aftter they made love, the two of them talk comfortably with one another, while lying next to each other.
- Ellie feels much more comfortable to share some of her scars with her, as Dina shares hers.
- But their moment gets abruptly cut when Jesse tells them that Joel hasn’t been found yet, which sends Ellie to quickly go search for him.
After this, Ellie ends up witnessing one of the most important and traumatizing moments of her life: the brutal murder of Joel, her father-figure, protector and the most important person left in her life. After being knocked unconscious following Joel’s death, Dina finds her, and she is the one who Ellie wakes up to.
- Ellie’s survivor’s guilt is thrust back into the forefront.
- At this moment in the story, Ellie has personally witnessed the death of everyone she has ever loved: Riley and now Joel.
- So Dina’s presence is completely important to Ellie.
- As she decides to set out on a quest for revenge, Dina’s role is not just as a friend.
Now, Dina is shown not as a flirty love interest but also as a supportive and consistent partner. The next few scenes are filled with interactions and dialogue that reinforce the couple’s deepening connection. The dialogue in this section is so good because it slowly establishes the effect of the two spending more time together.
- At some point, while they’re exploring an abandoned music store, their dialogue reveals that Dina’s attraction to Ellie is not new at all.
- Ellie – “Uhh, okay, we only listened to it like a hundred times together.” Dina – “I was only listening to it because I thought you were cute.” This playful admission creates an intro into an intimate guitar scene where Ellie starts playing the song Joel taught her, the acoustic cover of Pearl Jam’s “Future Days”, which is their goodbye theme.
Dina asks what it is but Ellie is not yet ready to open up and she plays Dina a song from their past, a cover of “Take on Me” by Aha as Dina watches wistfully. Finally, they also discuss their past feelings honestly. Dina – “You should’ve kissed me then.” Ellie – “I wanted to.” In the next few sections of the game Ellie and Dina go through more shared trauma and make their way across Seattle.
- It eventually culminates in the pair running away from a horde of infected and Dina witnessing first-hand that Ellie is immune.
- This revelation brings deception that damages their trust since Ellie was wearing her mask the whole time.
- Once they escape to a nearby theater, a tense exchange ensues and Ellie and Dina have a pretty upsetting fight.
Dina realizes that Ellie was honest about her immunity earlier when she thought Ellie was joking, so this leads Dina to be honest about her pregnancy, even knowing that those news will not be well-received. Even so, Ellie’s response is pretty cold. Dina tells her she didn’t want to be a burden, but Ellie comes back at her saying that she’s now one, which deeply hurts Dina.
So after this fight, they both spend time away from each other for the first time in weeks. Ellie eventually falls asleep alone and for mental comfort returns to a happy memory of Joel. Later, Ellie returns to find Dina vomiting but also trying to help track-down WLF members via the radio. Ellie hurt Dina but she is still trying to help Ellie on her quest.
And there is somewhat of an apology from Ellie and she comforts a sick Dina. As they try to leave, Dina is struggling and Ellie decides to leave her at the theater. But before she leaves, Dina gives Ellie her bracelet for good luck. Ellie returns in the next section with Jesse, Dina’s previous lover and father of her baby.
- Dina continues to invest in Ellie, but still, Jesse’s presence sows uncertainty in Ellie, even though Dina reinforces that she wants re-connection with Ellie not Jesse.
- Dina stitches Ellie’s wound and tenderly cuts the thread with a bite/kiss.
- Dina wants Ellie to embrace their love over hate, and to choose her over her continued obsession with revenge.
Dina is subtly upset at Ellie’s desire for revenge but keeps it in. Ellie rushes out after this scene to go to the hospital in search of Abby and eventually finds Nora and tortures her to get answers. Upon returning, Ellie is traumatized by her actions.
- She starts to finally examine the choices she is making and grappling with the cost of her hatred.
- Dina embraces Ellie out of her continued love and support.
- Ellie tells her that she doesn’t want to lose her, and Dina kisses her, just whispering “I know.” Shortly after this scene, dialogue with Tommy reinforces that Ellie has made the choice to put Dina’s first.
Ellie has not let go of her guilt yet but she is suppressing it because she loves Dina and wants to commit to their life together. However, while it was Ellie’s intention to leave, Abby shows up and kills Jesse and nearly kills Tommy and Dina. But Ellie and Dina survive.
- A year later, the two of them start leaving together with their son, J.J., on a farm, seemingly leaving a peaceful life.
- However, Ellie is still haunted by her PTSD flashbacks and her need for revenge.
- So much so that she barely eats and sleeps at night.
- So when Tommy comes to visit them at the farm and reveals that he knows where Abby is, Ellie initially suppresses her hatred once again but eventually decides that she no longer can, with her guilt rising to the surface.

- Yes I knew it was a knife).
- It was infact a machti (wrong spelling, I know) But are you saying that it is a stariotype for red heads to swear a lot, because unless ANYONE has looked up the Ellie page on this wiki, it will say reddish-brown.
- Do we all agree? If not, good luck comeing up with a better answer.
I agree, that was quite an ignorant and sterotypical response. Anyway, her hair is red to amburn / brown. It may suggest that Anna (her mother) was herself a red head, and Ellie’s biological father may have had brown hair. Xwing99: You know you can just search “machti” on the wiki and get the correct spelling.

Why can’t Ellie turn?
Ellie Grew Up With the Cordyceps in Her System, and This Isn’t Exactly Good News – Image via HBO It is only upon reaching said research facility – a deactivated hospital – that Joel learns the truth about how the Fireflies intend to use Ellie to create a vaccine. After being captured by the Fireflies, Joel wakes up in a hospital room with Marlene by his side.
- Ellie is nowhere to be found.
- As Marlene explains to him, she has been taken to surgery.
- Wait, surgery ? Yeah, Joel doesn’t like the sound of that either.
- Marlene, however, is quick to assure him that this is absolutely necessary.
- You see, the leading Firefly theory as to why Ellie is immune to Cordyceps is that the fungal spores inside her body grew up with her.
Somehow, probably through that umbilical cord that Anna lied about cutting off before getting bitten, she was exposed to the fungus when she was still a baby. Thus, when she was bitten by an infected during her trip to the mall with Riley, in Episode 7, the spores that entered her system took her for one of them.
- This, in turn, stopped the infection from developing.
- Considering just how gruesome the Cordyceps infection is, this certainly sounds like great news for Ellie, and even greater news for humanity as a whole.
- After all, if there is a fungal charge to which people can be exposed without danger or an age in which the infection isn’t able to take hold, this means that there are great chances for a vaccine on the horizon.
Since antifungal vaccines in general are still out of humanity’s reach, isolating the spores that make Ellie immune and using them to curb the evolution of the disease would be one hell of a scientific breakthrough. However, creating a vaccine is never simple, and the Cordyceps shot has its fair share of extra complications.

Who Is Riley To Ellie? – In the series pilot, Marlene (Merle Dandridge),, mentions Riley during a conversation with Ellie. Held captive by the Fireflies for days after she’s bitten, Ellie doesn’t turn into an Infected, making her valuable to the group’s desire to develop a cure.
- Ellie clearly has some reservations about the resistance group, but the audience isn’t clued into those reservations.
- Of course, they have chained Ellie up in a room, so some amount of disdain isn’t surprising.) Marlene tries to convince Ellie of her noble intentions — and of the fact that, despite their sometimes-violent methods,,
Ellie shoots her down, but then Marlene mentions Riley. Ellie has a strong reaction to hearing the young girl’s name. Marlene’s struck a nerve. The audience learns that Riley, whoever she was, knew Ellie well, and that she was a Firefly. Marlene’s argument to Ellie, then, is that not all Fireflies can be bad if Riley was one. As far as HBO’s The Last of Us is concerned, that’s all the information that’s given about Riley so far. However, Episode 7 is titled “Left Behind,” which is also the subtitle of a piece of downloadable content (DLC) released to fill in some story gaps in The Last of Us: Part 1,
Unfamiliar with DLC? Think of as a short story or a few additional chapters that didn’t make the final cut of the first game.) Left Behind, the game, tells two parallel stories. One is set during the time skip portion — between autumn and winter — of The Last of Us: Part 1, during which Joel is injured and Ellie is tasked with finding medical supplies in an abandoned mall in Colorado.

Viewers of the HBO series might recall Ellie referencing the abandoned mall in the Boston QZ; (Anna Torv) asks Ellie about her bite, and Ellie says that’s where she encountered the Infected. In The Last of Us: Left Behind is 16 years old — just two years older than Ellie. At the start of the Cordyceps outbreak, Riley’s father turns into an Infected. After her spore-infected father kills her mother in front of her, Riley is forced to kill him in order to survive. A prequel to The Last of Us: Left Behind, The Last of Us: American Dreams is a graphic novel that centers on Riley and Ellie, who meet at the FEDRA-run military boarding school in the, When Riley attempts to sneak out, Ellie insists on joining her. While they sidle along FEDRA-patrolled buildings, Riley asks Ellie what she wants to do with her future, only to have Riley say it’s pointless to think about it.
- But, to Riley, Ellie’s nihilism plays right into what FEDRA wants.
- Riley explains that in just a few months she’ll be 16 years old — the age at which she’ll have to choose between becoming a full-fledged FEDRA soldier, or another mistreated member of the QZ’s general population.
- Her plan? Become a revolutionary by joining the Fireflies, who are bent on,
Long story short, Riley acquires a walkie-talkie and listens in on the chatter to track down the Fireflies. She and a reluctant Ellie are soon cornered by Infected, but a few Fireflies save them. Relieved, Riley thanks the rebels and starts to introduce herself, but the Fireflies are not so welcoming.
Marlene, the group’s leader, recognizes Ellie; she knew, Anna, and had promised to look out for Ellie. When Riley stubbornly insists on joining the Fireflies’ ranks, Marlene tries to dissuade her by relaying the horrors members of the rebellion have to face. Eventually, Ellie and Riley head back to the boarding school, on Marlene’s orders.
On their way, Ellie suggests she and Riley run away together, but Riley tells her to stop talking; she knows the two of them will never survive outside the QZ. After a heated argument with Ellie, Riley tracks a Firefly back to one of the group’s hideouts only to come face-to-face with Marlene again. About six weeks pass between the end of American Dreams to the opening of The Last of Us: Left Behind, Disobeying Marlene’s orders, Riley (voice of Yaani King) sneaks back into the FEDRA boarding school to surprise Ellie (voice of ), who’s understandably upset that Riley all but vanished for over a month.

Although they argue for a bit, as she’s wanted this life — and to leave Boston — for a long, long time. After their water gun fight Ellie reiterates her support for Riley’s decision. “I said it like an asshole but I totally meant it. In response, Riley tears off her Firefly pendant;, It’s clear that Ellie has feelings for Riley — and Riley’s willingness to give up on the Fireflies and stay with Ellie proves that she reciprocates those feelings. In other installments in the franchise, Ellie makes it clear that Riley was the first person she fell in love with. After Ellie and Riley kiss, they hear — runners who heard their music and swarmed to the store. Although they outrun or kill most of the Infected, the teens are both bitten in the process. Exasperated, Ellie breaks things and, through tears, asks what they should do.
- Riley tells her they’ve got a few options: they can shoot themselves — the quick and painless way out — or they can fight.
- Fight for what?” Ellie asks.
- We’re gonna turn into one of those things.” Riley tells Ellie that there are a million ways they could have died, but that it’s important to fight for every second spent with one another.
“Whether it’s two minutes. Or two days. We don’t give that up,” Riley says. “I don’t want to give that up. My vote. Let’s just wait it out.,” The Last of Us: Left Behind ends there, but it’s clear that Riley succumbs to the infection and dies. Ellie, meanwhile, discovers her immunity, which leads into the events of The Last of Us: Part 1,

How old is Abby at the end of The Last of Us 2?
Abby Anderson’s Age Throughout The Last of Us Part II’s Timeline – The Art of The Last of Us Part II – an art book released by Dark Horse Comics in collaboration with Naughty Dog – reveals that Abby is in her early 20s during the main events of the sequel. The book features concept art, character designs and descriptions of Abby, so her age is pretty consistent throughout the long development of the series.
- This means when her father Jerry Anderson – the surgeon who would’ve operated on and killed Ellie – was murdered by Joel in the Salt Lake City hospital in 2034, she was in her mid-teens.
- By this logic, Abby is a few years older than Ellie, who is 19 in the main events of The Last of Us Part II,
- This revelation further reiterates how heartbreaking their tragedies are: they were both so young when they lost father figures in their lives, and they were experiencing tremendous transformations at relatively the same ages.
Jerry might’ve been there for Abby through her first big milestones, but he’ll never be there to see her grow as an adult. These realizations, plus the rage of a teenager losing her only parental figure, are what motivate Abby to find Joel. Perhaps if Abby was older and had more time with her father, she wouldn’t have been so hyper-focused on hunting Joel down for years.
