Apple’s apparent own goal comes courtesy of its latest iOS 17 beta release, which contains code related to the much-rumored (and now seemingly confirmed) ‘Action button’ coming to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Spotted by MacRumors, iOS 17 beta 4 code lists nine different functions for the button: Accessibility, Shortcuts, Silent Mode, Camera, Flashlight, Focus, Magnifier, Translate and Voice Memos.

While all these functions are fairly self-explanatory, the surprise is the sheer number of them. Previous leaks had claimed the Action button might support two or three options at launch, although it remains to be seen how many are accessible at the same time (via a combination of presses, swipes or gestures).

Third-party support is also something that would presumably come in time. The introduction of an Action Button has polarized opinion, with fans of the mute switch frustrated to see its departure, and the absence of a mute function for the button is unlikely to appease them. Yes, it may come later, but Apple has a long history of ‘leaking’ upcoming features via iOS updates, and this looks set to be the definitive list for now.

On the flip side, price rises for Pro Max models look set to be higher than expected.07/31 Update: Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has leaked a long list of upgrades for the iPhone 15 range in his latest Power On newsletter, Many of these align with existing leaks: USB-C for all models, Dynamic Island cutout designs, an upgraded primary camera and A16 chip for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.

• For the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max: super slim bezels, “a 3-nanometer chip that is noticeably snappier,” titanium chassis, and updated primary cameras with “a much wider range of optical zoom on the largest model,
• But Gurman does also throw in two nuggets that are new.
• First, is detail around the iPhone 15 Pro’s record-breakingly slim bezels, which he says will be produced by a new technology called Low-injection pressure over-molding (LIPO) That new process will shrink the border size around the display to 1.5 millimeters (from about 2.2 millimeters on current iPhones).

LIPO was first used in the Apple Watch Series 7 to make that device’s borders thinner and increase the size of the display.1.5mm is fractionally slimmer than the 1.55mm previously reported, and Gurman claims Apple will eventually bring the process to the iPad lineup as well.

He also reveals that the iPhone 15 range will mimic the internal layouts of the iPhone 14, which will make them easier to repair. Last week the leaker revealed the specific material compositions for the iPhone 15 range: Grade 5 Titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) for the Pros and Aluminum (Al 6013 T6) for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. Ti-6Al-4V is not pure aluminum, it’s an alloy blend of titanium, aluminum and vanadium, which is widely used in aerospace and biomechanical applications.

This is due to its high strength, corrosion resistance and reduced weight compared to stainless steel, which Apple used for Pro model chassis until now. Moreover, what Unknownz21 now tells me is Apple will use Ti-6Al-4V for every part of the chassis, even including the volume buttons and new solid-state Action button.

These are areas where Apple was expected to cut costs by using stainless steel. The benefit for buyers is this consistent use of Ti-6Al-4V has potentially significant weight benefits. Stainless steel is extremely heavy, making iPhone Pros some of the heaviest smartphones on the market (an iPhone 14 Pro weighs almost 70g more than the aluminum iPhone 14).

• In contrast, Ti-6Al-4V is 3-4x stronger than stainless steel at the same weight, so Apple could potentially double the strength of the iPhone 15 Pro chassis and still roughly half the chassis weight.
• Exactly what balance Apple will strike remains to be seen.
• It could go all in for added strength and match the stainless steel chassis weight, match the durability and produce a chassis 3-4x lighter, or strike a balance between the two.

When Apple released the iPhone 14 in September 2022, it marked a significant jump in camera specs. The previous flagship—the 13 Pro Max—had a 12 MP main camera. If you don’t mind the extra size, you’ll get to appreciate your photos much more on the bigger screen. The 48 MP main camera on the iPhone Pro/Pro Max is a 24mm f/1.78 seven-element lens.

It is notable for its quad-pixel construction and its sensor-shift image stabilization (IS). This is used to give super-smooth video as well as helping to keep your shots sharp. A 12 MP 2x telephoto 48mm f/1.78 “lens” is achieved by using a sensor crop from the main camera.

• Both have 100% focus pixels, which means both have edge-to-edge autofocus.
• The 12 MP ultra-wide lens is a 13mm f/2.2 six-element lens.
• The 120-degree field of view will give you GoPro-like images and video.
• Like the main camera, it has 100% focus pixels.

It has optical IS in both photo and video modes. So the camera configurations are impressive. They are certainly the best ever found on an iPhone and they rival many Android devices. But smartphone cameras are not all about lens sizes and specs. What enables your—let’s be honest—tiny smartphone camera lens to produce stunning results is the software.

• Once the light from the lens hits the sensor, smartphone manufacturers apply lots of tweaks.

It is worth noting that DSCC is headed up by Ross Young, who has arguably the most reliable track record of any Apple industry insider in recent years. So this gives the report a lot of credibility. That said, there is still scope for delays given that this manufacturing flaw was first surfaced by The Information, which claimed it would not delay the launch of the phones.

In contrast, Wamsi Mohan’s report did not state specific causes for the delay he reports, instead citing broader channel checks in Apple’s supply chain. Who is right remains to be seen, but with stock of new iPhones often constrained at launch coupled with these reports of supply chain and manufacturing issues, I would be surprised if there are not similar (and possibly more severe) issues this year.

Writing on his blog, Kuo has backed recent leaks that Apple will introduce a new 48-megapixel primary camera for both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.

Kuo states that the primary obstacle to the upgrade was a yield issue with the new camera’s CMOS image sensor (CIS). Speaking with Apple’s supply chain partners, Kuo has learned that the component has the green light after Sony, the main supplier of the new sensors, managed to more than double production capacity.

And the upgrade is big news for iPhone 15 buyers. Last year’s iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus used a 12-megapixel primary sensor, and although megapixels are far from the biggest factor in photo quality, what the new sensor will do in comparison is massively improve the quality of zoomed photos. While both standard iPhone 15 models will again lack a dedicated zoom lens, the new 48-megapixel primary camera will record significantly more information, allowing Apple to crop into the photo and retain more detail.

No, this upgrade won’t replace a dedicated zoom lens, but it’s a big step up, given Apple has shown no interest in bringing optical zoom photography to standard iPhone models. Moreover, Kuo’s report backs the findings of Hong Kong-based analyst Jeff Pu, an increasingly influential voice, who first claimed Apple was working to bring a new 48-megapixel sensor to the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus in May.
