What age can you get a nose job?
Rhinoplasty for Teenagers – There’s no set age that you have to be in order to have nose surgery performed. However, your nose needs to have stopped growing, otherwise it may end up deformed as it keeps growing after surgery. Usually, the nose stops growing around the ages of 14 to 16.
- One way to check is to see if the feet have grown at all within a year.
- In addition to the physical requirements, a teenager must be mentally ready for cosmetic surgery.
- They need to have realistic expectations as well, and be doing it for themselves – not for a boyfriend, girlfriend, parent, or friend group.
If your teenager thinks that having a nose job will suddenly increase their popularity at school or help their love life, they are likely not a great candidate for the procedure. A teenager might be a good candidate for a rhinoplasty if:
Their nose is deformed to the point that it causes bullying or mental anguishTheir nose causes significant embarrassment or self-consciousnessThey understand that a nose job is not a magic ticket to a better life
Teenagers under the age of 18 need parental consent to undergo elective surgery, including nose jobs.

Is it Haram to get a nose job?
Discussion – Over the decades, explanations for the motivation for cosmetic surgery have evolved. Initially, internal psychologic conflicts were suggested as a motivation for surgery ( 26 – 29 ). In parallel with the popularity of cosmetic procedures, requesting rhinoplasty is no longer associated with negative psychological connotations, although cynical reports still exist ( 30 – 32 ).
- Currently, the view is that the patient’s dissatisfaction with their body image persuades them to undergo cosmetic surgery ( 14, 15, 33, 34 ).
- However, it is likely that the factors that motivate a healthy person to undergo an operation are more complex.
- In particular, in recent years, interest in understanding the effects of religion on health has grown in the medical and scientific communities ( 35 ).
The principles of most religions, including Islam, profoundly affect human behavior and sentiment and command various strict rules regarding critical health issues ( 36 ). Today, it may seem natural that there should be little opposition to cosmetic surgery ( 37, 38 ); however, up to the start of the 20th century, most religions were opposed to any form of surgery for purely cosmetic reasons.
Medical problems and physical disfigurement were considered forms of divine will, and it was not legitimate to correct what God had decreed ( 38 ). Although this view may have softened somewhat, studies clearly show that many patients consider religion to be very important and are interested in integrating their religious beliefs into their health care ( 39 ).
According to previous studies, females who opted to wear less than the full Islamic veil were significantly more motivated to undergo rhinoplasty compared with those who wore the complete veil ( 17, 40 ). In addition, those who committed themselves to pray and fast had a significantly reduced tendency toward rhinoplasty compared with other groups ( 40 ).
- However, the lack of accurate information about the actual level of religious attitude is a shortcoming of the medical literature.
- Although previous studies have assessed some of the more objective and important Islamic practices, including the level of belief in praying, fasting and veil wearing, and their role in the desire to undergo rhinoplasty, this is not the whole story of the Islamic religion.
It is possible that the levels of veil wearing, praying and fasting were not exactly correlated with levels of religiosity in former studies. In the current study, we separately assessed the relationship between the level of religious attitude and motivation for rhinoplasty.
- In the category of patients who had a relative indication for rhinoplasty, the presence of strong religious beliefs was related to a lower demand for surgery.
- On the other hand, the religion did not show any effect on the opinion of subjects with a severe deformity who had an absolute indication for cosmetic surgery.
The findings of our study are in accordance with Islamic law. Although various aspects of Islamic doctrine about cosmetic surgery remain vague, religious scholars generally state that beautification used to improve a deformed part of the body is generally permissible and can eliminate physical and psychological distress.
However, manipulating the body for decadent purposes only is not permissible and is therefore unlawful ( 16 ). Based on these Islamic beliefs, the reduction of desire to rhinoplasty in subjects with a higher level of religious attitude can be justified. As mentioned by former studies, body dissatisfaction is the most prominent reason for requesting cosmetic surgery among women.
A few reports that assessed body dissatisfaction and religious ideology concluded that Islamic beliefs have a positive impact on body respect ( 17, 41 ). The effect of some religious practices on body image has been described in several other studies ( 42 – 44 ).
- Here, we conclude that the attitude of women who have stronger religious beliefs was more likely to promote the elevation of spiritual values and internal beauty; while females with less religious attitudes overestimated the importance of the public view of slimness and appearance.
- These findings can explain the lower demand for undue surgery among religious women.
In our study we controlled for some of the probable factors that might motivate someone toward cosmetic surgery; factors such as educational level, income and some aspects of personality such as hobbies. The two groups who were evaluated were comparable from the point of their income, educational level and hobbies.
Does rhinoplasty change your smile?
You Will Get Your Original Smile Back After Rhinoplasty – Rhinoplasty surgery can temporarily affect your smile. Surgery aiming to modify the tip or shape of your nose may leave your upper lip feeling stiff due to swelling, thus changing your smile. The amount of swelling a rhinoplasty patient experiences depends on the type of surgery conducted, the surgeon’s technique, and the extent of the work done.
- If most of the work focuses on the bottom of the columella or around the base of the nose, the top lip drops temporarily.
- As a result, the top lip doesn’t move up when smiling, making a smile appear unnatural or forced.
- However, you can rest easy knowing that any changes to your smile are temporary, and your original smile will return as the nose heals.
After a nose job, the healing process can take up to six months. Any stiffness you feel while smiling will dissipate over time, and with a healed nose will come a beautifully effortless smile. Additional Read: How Rhinoplasty Can Improve Your Facial Harmony

How long after a nose job can you kiss?
Questions about postoperative recovery: – How much bleeding from my nose is normal? – The average amount of time that a patient experiences bloody or blood-tinged mucus drainage from their nostrils after this procedure is about 2 days. However, the range of normal is anywhere from one day to a full week.
As long as there is not a steady flow of active bleeding, continue to use the drip pad and the draining will stop, almost always within one week. How long should I wait after nasal surgery to kiss my partner? – I tell patients to wait 6 weeks before returning to contact sports, so if you consider kissing a contact sport, then 6 weeks.
If not, then you can kiss your partner as soon as you are able to do so painlessly. How long until I can wear sunglasses after a nose job? – I recommend waiting 3 weeks before wearing sunglasses if the nasal bones are broken; meanwhile, investing in a hat is a good idea to block out the sun.
Will rhinoplasty change my voice? – There will only be a change in your voice if I am clearing a blockage that is already altering your voice. A voice change is almost impossible unless you do sinus surgery, which can change the resonance of your voice because it changes the volume of space. Will I retain my sense of smell after surgery? – At first you will notice a weakened sense of smell due to congestion, but it should be back to normal within 4 weeks as the swelling subsides.
Will my sense of taste be affected after a nose job? – Since your sense of smell may be affected, you may notice a weakened sense of taste; however, it will return to normal once your sense of smell is back to normal. What is the plastic I can see and/or feel inside my nose? – These thin sheets of plastic are called silastic splints and they are held in place with a suture to keep your septum stable in the postoperative period.
The suture and the splints will most likely be removed at your first postoperative visit. What do I do if I have to sneeze? – If you need to sneeze in the postoperative recovery period, leave your mouth open and let the rush of air come out of your mouth. When can I blow my nose after nasal surgery? – I recommend waiting 2 weeks before blowing your nose.
I have patients spray their nose with salt water, 2-3 sprays per nostril at least three times a day, to help break up any clots that form. Sometimes a nasal surgery can lead to congestion within the nostrils, but the salt water will help with that too.
- If given splints, your nose may feel clogged, but it is normal; you will have a sense of relief when they are removed at the first post-op visit.
- Is it normal for my teeth to be numb? – Yes, it is normal for the front teeth and the nasal tip to suffer some numbness.
- The nerve that provides sensation to this area is often transected during surgery, and it frequently takes up to 6 weeks or more of the sensation to fully recover in this area.
Will I be able to smoke/drink after surgery? – I tell patients to wait 1 week before consuming alcohol as it is a blood thinner and can increase swelling which leads to more pain or bleeding. As for smoking, I would prefer no one smokes; however, if you are going to smoke, then wait 2 weeks after surgery.
Cigarettes contain nicotine which constricts the veins in the nose and can prevent blood from reaching the tissues which can slow down healing. When can I take a shower after surgery? – You can take a shower the day after surgery and wash your face as you normally would while trying your best to avoid the bandages.
When can I participate in strenuous activities? – Wait 2 weeks before returning to strenuous activities such as; running, lifting weights, and yes, intercourse. When can I wear makeup after my nose job? – You can wear makeup at any point after the procedure, however I would ask you to wait 2 days before applying anything over the incision line.
- When can I drink from a straw? – There are no restrictions as to when you can drink from a straw.
- How and when do I use the saline spray? – It is a good idea to use 2 sprays of saline in each nostril at least 4 times per day following this surgery.
- This will help prevent large blood clots from forming that may block your breathing and contribute to more postoperative discomfort.
When will my stitches go away? – The stitches should fully dissolve after 6 weeks. Starting 1 week after your first post-op clinic visit, if there is a loose stitch, feel free to cut it or contact my office to coordinate a follow-up visit What do I do if the cast on the outside of my nose falls off? – Do not worry if the external cast falls off, it is essentially there as a reminder to be gentle with your nose.
However, the tape that is underneath the case will remain in place until the first postoperative visit and will continue to hold the structure in the desired location during the postoperative period. How should I sleep after rhinoplasty surgery? – I ask that you sleep with your head elevated on pillows at about 45 degrees for 1 night after surgery; after that feel free to sleep in any position you would like.
When can I be fully submerged in water after nose surgery? – You can jump back in the pool after 3 weeks. Can I ever get a nose piercing after a rhinoplasty? – You certainly can; however, I would tell you to wait 3 months after surgery before getting it pierced.
Can I smile after getting a rhinoplasty? – Depending on the surgery, you may notice some discomfort in smiling, however, you are always allowed to smile. 🙂 It is essential to consider your own reasons for wanting to have, and whether your expectations are realistic. It is equally important to find a surgeon you feel comfortable asking all your questions to before undergoing the knife, and one with whom you have excellent rapport and communication to help you get through the entire process.
Lastly, it can be a great comfort to have all the little questions about postoperative recovery answered before surgery so that you can rest, relax, and recover rather than worry. Rhinoplasty can be a very uplifting experience when done for the right reasons and with a strong patient and surgeon relationship.

How can I make my nose smaller?
How can I reduce the size of my nose? – The most effective and permanent way of reducing the size of the nose is a type of surgery called rhinoplasty. Dermal fillers can also be used if a person did not want to undergo surgery, by what is called ‘ non-surgical rhinoplasty’, but in reality are better at adding volume rather than reducing it.
Should a 14 year old get a nose job?
Case Study 1 – Teenage Rhinoplasty – Dr. Bublik explains that adolescence brings many physical changes, including changes to a teenager’s face. The adolescent’s sinuses continue to grow which enlarges the face; the jaw (especially for boys) begins to increase in size and the nose changes shape and enlarges along with the face, resulting in what some teens call a “big nose”.
- The nose, specifically the septum (the wall that separates the two sides of the nose) serves as the focal point or center for mid-facial growth. Dr.
- Bublik is adamant in clarifying that when it comes to “nose jobs”, timing is critical.
- Prematurely disturbing this growth center could lead to abnormal development of the face.
Therefore, it is essential that teens and their parents consult a qualified surgeon such as Dr. Bublik who has the expertise and experience to evaluate the adolescent’s facial growth and determine the appropriate time to consider a rhinoplasty. In general,Dr.
Bublik explains, most girls can have a rhinoplasty about one year after their first menstrual period, while the right time for boys can vary more dramatically, although nose surgery can typically be performed successfully by age 16. Parents and teens alike often ask Dr. Bublik how long it takes after surgery to be able to return to normal activities.
Dr. Michael Bublik observes that, in average, most teens need to take off about one full week and focus on recuperating and resting after surgery. Most of Dr. Bublik’s patients return to normal physical activity three weeks after surgery, except for contact sports such as wrestling and football that should be avoided for at least 6-8 weeks.
- Another concern that is often raised by patients and their parents relates to pain. Dr.
- Bublik likes to reassure his patients that they will not feel anything during surgery, however, he points out that patients are likely to experience some discomfort, but very little pain, right after the surgery, while the patient’s face, particularly around the eyes, may look bruised and swollen for a couple of days.
In Dr. Bublik’s experience, any discomfort or pain tends to subside on the second or third day after the rhinoplasty. As a skilled surgeon, it’s important to Dr. Bublik to ensure that the patient’s nose is the right shape and proportion to the patient’s face, so that the adolescent will look better but still look like himself/herself.
- Dr.Bublik likes to point out good humoredly that, surprisingly, most classmates will not figure out that the teen had a nose job; most people will think the patient had a haircut, and won’t be able to figure out what’s different. Dr.
- Bublik reassures his young patients that even their close friends, who may know about the surgery, will probably not make a big deal about it as the patient’s new nose will harmoniously blend in with the rest of the teen’s facial features.
More importantly, Dr. Bublik points out, the patients are the ones who will notice the difference in their more elegant, less prominent noses, and the resulting feelings of self-confidence and pride in their appearance. As an ethical and conscientious surgeon, Dr.
- Bublik won’t operate on just anyone who comes to his office.
- He likes to ensure the timing is right in terms of facial development, and he needs to assess that the decision to have the surgery is the patient’s own decision and not the decision of pushy parents.
- Also critical to Dr.Bublik is evaluating the teen’s emotional maturity and that the teen has realistic expectations of the surgical outcome.
Finally, but equally important, Dr. Bublik considers the patient’s commitment in following pre and post-operative guidelines. In Dr. Bublik’s experience, teens like to take advantage of the summer and winter breaks to undergo surgery, so planning in advance is critical.
Can rhinoplasty make nose smaller?
Can I have a smaller nose? – Cosmetic rhinoplasty is still the most popular reason why patients consider nose reshaping surgery. There are countless, highly personal reasons why individuals turn to rhinoplasty to alter the size or shape of their nose.
A cosmetic rhinoplasty procedure can create more harmony and balance with a patient’s other facial features while boosting their self-confidence. For patients wanting a smaller nose, a reduction rhinoplasty could be the right solution. Men and women genetically inherit the size and shape of their nose from their parents.
By the time most people are 16 years old, their nose has fully developed. If a person is unhappy with how large their nose is, a reduction rhinoplasty procedure can make it smaller. This procedure can change the shape and size, from the tip of the bridge down to the nostrils.
