This classic British rhyme is how history remembers the six wives of King Henry VIII — nothing more than a single word pertaining to their fate. Now, nearly 500 years after their demises, these “ex-wives” are brought into the spotlight through the West End pop musical, “Six.” Forget everything you know about traditional musicals because “Six” is unlike any other.

• Right from the start, it does everything in its power to break barriers and norms.
• The British show is staged like a Beyonce rock concert and follows the simple plot of a vocal competition.
• The stage is relatively bare save for the orchestra — made up of electric guitars and pianos — just like any concert.

In the opening number, the six wives, who have come together to form a girl band, enter the stage in exaggerated, colorful, punk outfits and immediately break the fourth wall by introducing themselves and welcoming the audience to the performance in which they promise to set history straight.

After the opening number, the wives begin to quarrel among themselves over who should be the new group’s lead singer. To decide this, they each sing about their lives and time with Henry to see who had it the worst, all the while teasing each other. Each queen is given their own solo song which is as unique in style, sound and lyrics as they are.

Along with its uncommon staging and plot, the show differs in set up. Standard run times for a musical are anywhere between two and two and a half hours with two acts and an intermission in between. “Six,” however, is only 80 minutes with one act and no intermission.

Its official soundtrack is only 45 minutes long. Beyond this, the show is the most feminist to take the stage in theatre history. The lead cast consists of all females — the six wives. Through its lyrics as well as costuming, “Six” places the Queens in the center of history rather than as just side characters.

The show first came about when creator Toby Marlow was in his final year at Cambridge University studying English in 2016. Due to his involvement in theatre and music composition, he was approached about creating a new musical to be performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe is an international arts festival that takes place in Edinburgh, Scotland every year in August. The festival spans 25 days, more than 55,000 performers of music, theatre, circus acts, cabaret and spoken word. With this in mind, the idea came to him while studying for finals. He enlisted his friend Lucy Moss to help him and they wrote the musical together after reading up on the wives and watching the recording of Beyonce’s 2011 concert and story-telling performance, “Live at Roseland: Elements of 4.” The show first premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2017 and shortly after shown to the theatre department of Cambridge where producers picked it up.

“Six” toured across the UK during 2018 until finally making it to the prestigious West End in London at the beginning of 2019. In 2019, it was nominated for nine Olivier Awards including best-supporting actress for each of the Queens, although it went away empty-handed.

Since then, the show has opened casts in Australia, Broadway and touring companies across North America and the United Kingdom. “Six” is a unique, upbeat and modern musical for people who like history as well as pop music and feminism. Six the Musical is the hour and a half performance that has taken the world by storm. – The brainchild of two passionate Cambridge students has travelled the world with productions in the UK, Ireland, the West End, Broadway, and now Australia at the Sydney Opera House.

• The show has ridden on a wave of hype, with many musical theatre websites predicting that it will follow in the footsteps of legendary musicals like Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, and Hadestown to win the 2020 Tony Award for Best Musical.
• But it’s not really a musical and it’s not really that good.
• Six tells the stories of King Henry VIII’s six wives through a collection of pop songs as they compare lives to see who suffered the most and who should therefore lead their girl group.

Each wife is modelled after a different real life pop star which ranges from Ariana Grande, to Beyonce, to Adele; and the musical is presented as a concert with onstage instruments, bright lights, bedazzled costumes, and hand held microphones. As the audience sits in the theatre, harpsichord covers of famous pop songs from the last two decades play over the speakers and the stage is obscured by a thick layer of fog punctuated by bright purple lights.

1. They knows exactly what they are in for: a historical pop concert.
2. The in-concert moments are when this musical shines brightest.
3. The songs are catchy, fun, and exciting, and they are genuinely great pop tunes that sound like they belong on the Billboard Hot 100.
4. The singing performances from the Australian actresses were amazing, and all of them were technically very skilled.

Chloe Zuel, the actress of Catherine of Aragon was especially outstanding in her rendition of “No Way”, as was Vidya Makan in her powerfully subversive finale; while Courtney Monsma’s ability to portray the simultaneously tragic but fun Katherine Howard stunned audiences.

But while it is an fun production that originated as a college student’s concept album, it is clear even in performance that it is not designed to exist as anything more than that. The dialogue is clumsy and tonally confused. It gives the audience proverbial whiplash by sounding like a Hi-5 concert one moment to hammy, beginner improv-style dialogue the next, before snapping to blunt, and pretty overt, British jokes about sex and adultery.

The musical is confused about whether it wants to be an edgy, empowering retelling of history like Hamilton, or a fun education tool for kids like Horrible Histories, Admittedly, it does not succeed in either goal. Six tries to emulate Hamilton’s success by using modern musical elements and basing the story on a ‘woke’ and empowering retelling of history – but it simply doesn’t work.

As a revision on Henry VIII’s wives, it fails to provide a new or fresh perspective. Rather, it regurgitates a bunch of facts that the audience already knows and sets it to song. And while Six tries to sell itself as a woke, woman-power musical it kind of isn’t. Admittedly, in performance most of the characters are portrayed as strong, independent women, and they pull it off well by anchoring their music in modern day pop feminists.

But again, the dialogue is what lets it down. The squabbles between the wives play into the stereotype that women are catty and bitch about each other behind their backs. Meanwhile, Jane Seymour’s entire existence is just her whining about how she never had the chance to be a mother, there’s a racist song where all the characters sing in a thick and purposely bad German accent while saying phrases like “das is good” and “vunderbar”, and the entire musical is steeped in the idea that these women are only notable because of their relationship with King Henry VIII.

• Granted, the musical realises that its premise is problematic, and the wives admit that it “would’ve been really cool if we reclaimed our stories”, but when Six finally reframes their stories it feels disingenuous.
• Only in the last song of the show do the women finally reject Henry VIII and come to support and appreciate each other – and they all pat themselves on the back for doing so.

So it kind of feels like the writer of the show finished five of the six songs, had a realisation that revolving a woman’s life around their involvement with a man is not very woke, and had to quickly jot down a song to show that they knew that the musical was problematic from the beginning.

1. Six didn’t have to be like that.
2. It could have been about the women supporting each other from the start.
3. It didn’t need a storyline – it is literally a concert not a ten step hero’s journey.
4. And that is my other problem with Six,
5. It tries to sell itself as a musical when it really isn’t.
6. Most of the actresses cannot act or dance, they can only sing, and the choreography they are working with is very static compared to the likes of West Side Story, Moulin Rouge or most other musicals.

At the same time, the set and lighting design are barely used and don’t add much to their performances. A musical should cohesively combine acting, dancing, singing, lighting, sound design, direction, costuming, and set design together to tell a compelling story.

Is SIX appropriate for 13 year olds?

When I think of New York City, I automatically think of super-tall skyscrapers, giant foldable slices of pizza, and massive crowds of people. But nothing screams New York to me more than Broadway. There is absolutely nothing like seeing a Broadway show or watching the wonder in your child’s eyes as they watch their first one. No, it’s a modern retelling set more like a pop concert. It’s loud, it’s energetic, and it’s a whole lot of fun! Only ten people are in the cast, and they’re all female(!) – the six Queens and four ladies-in-waiting. The girls and I were excited to see the show while we were in NYC over the weekend. They dressed in cute purple tops to match the purple of the marquee and the lights ( Ellie’s purple lace-edged top and Lexie’s purple sweater ). I’ve heard that people even dress up in homemade versions of the Queens’ costumes though unfortunately, we didn’t see anyone dressed up while we were there. SIX is recommended for ages 10+, but I wouldn’t have a problem taking a child a few years younger than that. A couple of the songs are a bit racy, but the lyrics would likely go over the heads of most kids/tweens. At 80 minutes long with no intermission, it’s a great first show if you think your kiddos would have difficulty sitting through a longer show (for comparison, Hamilton is almost three hours long, including intermission).

Since its Broadway debut in 2015, Lin Manuel Miranda’s hip-hop infused biography of US founding father Alexander Hamilton has won wide acclaim and countless awards. It is a spectacular live production. The cast recordings and Disney Plus viewings can show you what it sounds like and looks like. But nothing compares to what watching it in a theatre feels like. The Melbourne cast is excellent as they sing, rap and dance throughout the show. The run time stretches over two and a half hours and there almost no slow numbers, even when the plot slows as the war ends. It is an energetic, kinetic production that dares you to sing along if only you could keep up. Headlined by Jason Arrow in the title role, the Australian cast is uniformly strong. Those that inhabit multiple characters such as Marty Alix as John Laurens and Phillip Hamilton disappear effortlessly into the roles. Hamilton draws heavily on early hip hop. As a nod to the east coast setting of much of the show, lyrics, flows and one entire song are tributes or interpolations of New York’s 90’s scene. There are musical references to Mobb Deep, Nas, Jay Z and Grandmaster Flash. ” is a direct tribute to Biggie Smalls “and the Brooklyn icon’s unique phrases are sprinkled throughout numerous numbers. Unfortunately, despite the setting, there is no room for Wu Tang Clan lyrics. “Bring Da Ruckus” would have felt quite at home in the first half of the show. Although as, some songs were refused clearance by record labels prior to the opening night in 2015. You do not need to be a hip hop head to enjoy Hamilton, It adds some enjoyable Easter eggs that will have you pointing at things you recognize like a Di Caprio meme. But it is merely a bonus feature of an almost flawless show. Likewise, you do not need to know or have a passion for U.S revolutionary history. Although exposition is fired out at a rapid pace the lyrics and performances communicate the events well. It was a momentous period of western history, depicted by a momentous production.
