What Are Tape In Hair Extensions – A Complete Guide Tape extensions are one of the most popular hair extension methods on the market due to them being so quick and easy to apply, lightweight and virtually invisible as they lay flat to the head. The biggest advantage of tapes is that as they are the lightest and least damaging type of permanent extension meaning they are suitable for all hair types from very fine hair to thick.
Here at Cliphair we have a huge variety of colours and lengths in including our brand new gorgeous shades! In today’s blog we are going to explain how tapes are applied, removed and re-used. We will also explain the advantages and disadvantages of this extension type including in depth information of how they should be maintained.
Already bought your tape ins? Then read our to find out common mistakes when applying or removing and how to avoid them. Tapes are a type of permanent hair extension consisting of a 4cm wide weft of hair secured at the top with a sticky tab that is attached to the hair.
- The adhesive used on tape extensions is a gentle medical glue the same as what is used in plasters and other medical forms.
- The sticky part of the tape is covered by a paper tab that is easily peeled away when you are ready to use them, the sticky tab can be removed and re-taped with each use making this method not only super quick and easy but cost effective too.
Tape extensions come in all different lengths and colours, they are also able to be cut to create smaller pieces for a subtle highlight effected. Tapes are applied to the hair using 2 of the wefts sandwiched together with your own hair in-between. It is advised that the slice of hair in-between the tapes is very slightly smaller in width so that stray hairs do not hang out of the tab.
The hair in-between the tape should also be of the same thickness as the tape itself to ensure the hair is able to hold the weight of the extension. Applying any permanent extension to a too small amount of hair can cause damage and hair pull, it is always advised to mimic the weight of the weft/strand that you are applying.
The placement of the tapes will totally depend on the look you are trying to achieve and will be decided by your hair stylist, the brickwork pattern is usually preferred for a natural finish. Tape extensions are removed with a liquid solution, Here at Cliphair we have a gentle oil based citrus that easily loosens tapes and removes them.
- A lot of removers are alcohol based and can have a very strong acetone smell which is not very pleasant and can be irritating to your scalp.
- We advise using oil based removers as they are kinder the the skin and hair.
- To remove the tapes using the remover solution generously spray the top of the tab a few times, leave for 30 seconds then you should feel the tab starting to loosen.
Gently pull the tape away from the hair, if the tape is being stubborn and feels very secure you can use the end of a pin tail comb to carefully prise the tabs apart. Once you have removed one side of the sandwich, respray and repeat for the underneath section.
- To re-tape tape hair extensions you will first need to remove the old sticky tab from the weft.
- Most of this will come off during the removal process however some of the residue may stick around, you need to remove this before re-taping.
- To remove any leftover residue, use a little more spray and using your nail you can peel the remaining adhesive away from the tab.
This should peel off in one easy strip if the residue is being stubborn we find running the tab under water can help. Once you have removed all of the previous adhesive you now need to wash and dry the hair, we advise using a strong conditioning mask on the hair after any removal service to rehydrate the extensions.
- Once the hair is clean, dry and smooth you can start to re-tape the extensions, to do this you will need a new pack of sticky tape tabs.
- Here at Cliphair we have a pack of perfectly sized to re-apply to your hair extensions.
- Simply peel a tab away from the plastic sheet and apply onto the side that used be the sticky before you removed the residue.
Leave the paper seal intact until you are ready to apply the tapes again. The tabs are double sided so you will not need to apply them twice, one side will stick to the extension weft and the other to the hair. All tape hair extensions should be removed and re-installed after 6-8 weeks of wear, sometimes sooner depending on your hairs growth cycle and overall condition of your extensions.8 weeks is the maximum time the extensions should be left in without a re-position.
- After 6-8 weeks of having your extensions in, your own hair will have started to grow and the extensions move with it creating a larger gap between the tab and your scalp.
- Its at this stage that the hair could start to matt and tangle as there is more room for the hair to get stuck between your extensions, this is why it is important to have them removed by 8 weeks of wear to prevent any damage occurring to your own hair.
To keep your hair looking and feeling its best its strongly advised to have a maintenance check up a week after your application then every 4 weeks after this to check for any knotting/slippage. There are many things you can do to keep your hair extensions well maintained and fresh for as long as possible, we have some great blogs specifically focusing on this subject right here.
- The main 3 points to stick to are firstly using the correct products is an absolute must! Steer clear of any products that contain alcohol, oil or sulphate, these ingredients will not only dry out your extensions but also weaken the adhesive attaching the tapes to your hair.
- Regularly separating any knots or matting that is starting to form, this can be done by using your fingers to check between each tape and row to make sure no hair is getting caught up with a neighbour extension and brushing your hair morning and night.
Lastly always use before styling your hair to prevent your hair from drying out or breaking, hair extensions have been removed from their natural source of hydration so are likely to dry out faster than our own hair. They need lots of added moisture and protection so don’t skimp on the best quality,

Do tape extensions damage your hair?
Do Tape In Extensions Damage Your Hair? – The truth is, tape in hair extensions can damage your natural hair. If you have them applied by a specialist, do not wear them frequently, and ensure that you look after them properly, however, there should be no reason to worry about long term damage.
The average tape weighs 2 grams and whilst they look fantastic, if incorrectly applied they can cause untold damage to the natural hair. This is why you should never try to apply them yourself. An experienced hair extensions technician will also tell you that they can become sticky quite easily and tying them up can cause the hair to matt,
You should always follow the maintenance and care advice given to you when you have your tapes fitted. There may also be a certain degree of damage during the removal process. Many salons use an acetone-based solvent in order to remove the adhesive. Any solvent applied to the hair can result in damage.
How long can you keep tape in extensions in?
One of the best parts of having tape hair extensions is the fact that if they are cared for correctly, they can last between 6-8 weeks, That’s 2 months of fabulous, long, and thick locks. After that time, you can come into the salon for your refit which is charged at a discounted cost. Visit our prices page to find out the full price list of all our extension methods. To ensure your extensions are kept in the best condition you need to follow the correct aftercare and maintenance advice. Once you have had your tape extensions applied be sure to wait 24-48 hours before washing your hair, this allows the adhesive enough time to adhere to your natural hair and hold tighter. If you’re new to the world of hair extensions, we have a few top tips on how to wash your hair extensions:
- Before washing your hair, start at the ends and brush out any tangles with a Tangle Teaser.
- Make sure you wash your hair in the shower (never the bath)
- Make sure you are using salon quality shampoo, it’s important that your shampoo cleanses your root area well and doesn’t leave a build-up of product or too much moisture at the root as this could lead to your tape extensions slipping. If you want to know more about products, we recommend visit our blog post.
- Use a clarifying or volume shampoo and lather the shampoo on top of your head where there are no extensions.
- Use downward strokes only on the hair extension connections and do not scrub or rub.
- Use a conditioner on the mid lengths and ends of your hair.
- Never put your head upside down, this means that you cannot wrap your hair in a turban
Now that you are a pro at washing your hair extensions we have 2 top tips for how to dry your extensions:
- Make sure your hair extensions have been dried at the root and don’t leave your hair wet for long periods of time.
- Blow-dry your hair using your fingers until your hair is 80% dry. Brushing your hair aggressively when wet can lead to loss of extensions.
Caring for hair extensions isn’t that much different to caring for your own hair and doesn’t require that much more time, just make sure you follow our 3 golden rules :
- No pulling
- No oily roots
- No upside-down head

Do tape in extensions fall out easily?
Tape extensions are a semi-permanent hair extension that are for professional use only and should be applied in a salon by a trained professional! Some people think you just “tape on” or stick the “tape extensions” on your hair one by one-FALSE! They need to be taped in-NOT ON! Tape extensions do not get simply taped on-you would be surprised the amount of people that actually just stick them on their head and go-we wish! Sticking tape extensions to your hair will NOT work properly and they will fall out within a few hours.
- Tape IN extensions are taped in BONDS in between your own hair, they are bonded together in a “sandwich” in between your own hair.
- They are designed to last 8-12 weeks and are reusable for 3-4 applications.
- They are made with a strong medical grade adhesive and with proper application and maintenance they usually not slip for AT LEAST 8 weeks.
Tape extensions CAN NOT be applied by yourself or a friend-they simply will not last because the tape bonds need to be applied precisely to bond together correctly. If you had your tape extensions professional installed by a certified professional and they are still slipping out here are the most common reasons why: Top reasons why tape extensions slip:
Improper Application: The NUMBER ONE reason why tape extensions slip is that they are applied outside of the salon or you applied them yourself-this is the MOST common reason why tape extensions slip. If you had your friend apply them and you expect them to last as if you went to a professional, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment as they will slip. ALSO: Going to a salon where the hairstylist IS NOT trained will ALSO make them slip. The hairstylist may not know how to properly apply them. Ask the hairstylist, are they certified in tape in hair extensions ? The answer should be yes! Putting too much or too little hair in between the bonds will cause the hair to slip. Clarifying must be done three times too. Also, at the time of reapplication, the tape wefts must be properly cleaned and reapplied. Again, all of this is learned through proper tape in hair extension certification. Same Day Chemical Treatments: Hair color or chemical treatments done the same day of a tape in application will cause slippage. Chemical processing of your own hair (all color, keratin etc) should be done a week before tape in application. Product Buildup: Excess product buildup breaks down the tape. No alcohol or oil based products should be used while wearing tape extensions, it will break tape adhesive down much faster. Be sure to use special hair extension hair care to ensure long lasting tape extensions. Thin or Super Fine Hair: If you have thin or fine hair, you will need to have your tape extensions applied differently. For women with thin or fine hair, you must have the tape extensions installed using the Single Sided tape in method! Naturally Oily Scalp/Hair: There are those that have excess oil and have naturally oily hair. Tape extensions won’t hold as long and you will need to replace your tape extensions more frequently-every 6 weeks to so.
How often do you replace tape in extensions?
How long do tape-in hair extensions last? – If tape-ins are cared for properly, they will last a year or longer. We recommend moving the hair up every four to six weeks. The hair can be reused two to three times which gives the client three to six months in between replacing the hair.
What is one disadvantage of tape in hair extensions?
Cons of Tape-In Hair Extensions – 1. Tape-in hair extensions can be visible if not installed correctly. If the tape is not applied close to the natural hair’s root, it can create a bulge visible on the scalp. The extensions can also slip out of place if they are not installed correctly, which can cause them to be visible.

First, you will need a rat tail comb. This comb has a long, thin handle that is useful for reaching small areas. You will also need some sharp scissors. Finally, you will need some extension remover or oil. However, if you don’t have one, you may use rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover (Make sure it is acetone-free!).
- Start by using the rat tail comb to gently loosen the tape holding the extension in place.
- Once the tape is loosened, you can use the scissors to cut through it carefully.
- Be careful not to cut your hair! Once the extension is loose, use a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol or acetone-free nail polish remover to help dissolve the adhesive residue that may be left behind on your hair and scalp.3.
Tape-in hair extensions can cause damage to your natural hair if they are not installed properly. If the extensions are not installed correctly, they can pull on your natural hair, leading to breakage. In addition, if the adhesive used to attach the extensions is not strong enough, it can cause the extensions to slip out, also damaging your natural hair.4.
Gentle Shampoo: A gentle shampoo is vital for tape-in hair extensions. Avoid shampoos with sulphates as they can dry and strip your hair. We recommend using a moisture-rich or colour-safe shampoo to keep your tape-ins looking their best.
Conditioner: Conditioner is essential for keeping your tape-ins hydrated and healthy looking. Again, we recommend avoiding conditioners with sulphates as they can be drying for your hair. Instead, opt for a moisturising or colour-safe conditioner to help keep your tape-ins looking their best.
Styling Products: When it comes to styling products, less is more when you have tape-in hair extensions. Avoid heavy oils or creams as they can weigh down your hair and cause the tapes to loosen over time. We recommend using a lightweight leave-in conditioner or serum to help protect and style your extension.
5. Tape-in hair extensions can be uncomfortable and irritating if they are not installed correctly. If the adhesive is not strong enough, the extensions can slip out, which can be painful and damaging to your natural hair. In some cases, tape-in hair extensions can also cause allergic reactions.
Why is my hair so thin after tape in extensions?
Can Hair Extensions Cause Hair Loss? – While the reasons, severity, and details may vary, the general answer to this question is: Yes, hair extensions can in fact cause hair loss, “Hair extensions can instantly add volume and length to your hair so we can appreciate the temptation to use them, however, the answer is yes—they absolutely can cause hair loss,” says Ayesh.
“Traction alopecia is hair loss due to pulling of the hair follicle from the scalp. It can be caused by the overuse of hair extensions or improper use of hair extensions.” Different types of extensions may present a different level of hair loss risk, the experts note. “The main culprits in this regard will be weaved in extensions and microbead-type extensions.
These are often applied quite close to the root and worn for extended periods (many months) and, if done incorrectly or too tightly, can damage the follicle, aka the root,” Burg explains. “Each follicle has a small muscle attached to it called the arrector pili muscle which can be damaged with repeated or prolonged pressure from tight weaves or incorrectly applied extensions.” He continues: “Once the muscle is damaged and detached from the root, the root may die, resulting in hair loss.
It’s also important to note that very long and heavy extensions can also have the same impact on the follicles regardless of the type of extension, as the sheer weight of the added hair can damage the root, especially if the weight is pulling on a small or isolated number of strands.” When asked if some people are more susceptible to hair loss from extensions than others, the experts again agreed that the answer is yes.
“If you are already experiencing unwanted hair loss, wearing extensions can exacerbate the issue,” says Shapiro. “Weakened hair may be more susceptible to this strain. If you have other causes of hair loss, make sure to be especially careful with hair extensions, avoiding excessive strain on your hair.” For those who may not be experiencing unwanted hair loss yet, note that other aggressive treatments to your hair combined with hair extensions can up your odds of facing the issue.
- People who color their hair often or subject their hair to chemical treatments will often have greater chances of experiencing hair loss because the hair breakage and damage is already present,” notes Ayesh.
- It’s also important to understand the reg flags that typically present themselves with extensions before hair loss occurs.
“If your scalp feels sore or tender when you are wearing extensions, there’s a good chance you are putting yourself at risk for traction alopecia,” says Shapiro. “Without proper intervention, permanent scarring can occur, and the hair loss can go from temporary to permanent.”
Does sweat ruin tape in extensions?
5. How Often Should I Wash My Hair When Exercising with Tape Hair Extensions? – If you’re like most people, you probably don’t give much thought to how often you should wash your hair. But if you have tape hair extensions, it’s important to be aware of how often you should wash them to keep them looking their best.
Ideally, you should wash your hair with tape hair extensions every 3-5 days. This will help to remove any build-up of sweat and oils from your hair and scalp and will also help to keep your extensions looking clean and fresh. If you exercise regularly, you may need to wash your hair more often. This is because sweat can cause your hair to become greasy and can also cause the tape to loosen.
If you find that your hair is looking greasy or feeling heavy after exercise, try washing it that day.
How often can I shower with tape in extensions?
Can I wash my hair everyday with Tape In Extensions? – Washing your hair every day is a bad idea when you have tape in hair extensions. Stick to washing them no more than three times a week. Like it or not, washing your hair every day is a big no when you’re wearing tape hair – you shouldn’t wash your tape ins any more than three times a week.
Can you brush over tape in extensions?
How do I brush my tape-in extensions? –
Use a special hair extensions brush to gently brush your hair with one hand on your scalp so you know you aren’t pulling too much. Never use a comb or brush on wet hair as this can be too aggressive. Do not brush freshly attached tape in extensions (wait at least 24 hours).
Do tape in extensions look real?
What are tape in extensions? – Tape in extensions are a method for attaching pre-taped wefts directly to the hair with medical-grade adhesive. Tape in extensions are quick and inexpensive to install, but they only last 4-8 weeks and can damage the natural hair.
Tape in extensions are usually very secure, as the adhesive bonds the extension hair and natural hair together. They lay flat against the head and blend in with the natural hair. As long as the tape is fully concealed, these extensions look very discreet and natural. For best results, tape in extensions should always be applied by a qualified stylist.
Crooked or improperly placed tape ins do not look natural, pull on the roots and can hurt the scalp and even cause hair loss. Removing tape in extensions also requires professional help to minimize damage. Residue from the adhesive can remain on the hair and scalp for several shampoos after removal.
Is 2 packs of tape in extensions enough?
For Thick Hair Types – If you want more length, use 6 to 8 packs. If you want added volume or dimension, use 4 to 6 packs.

How do you sleep with tape-in extensions?
How to Sleep With Hair Extensions: Basic Tips and Recommendations – Here are the top 5 tips on how to sleep with hair extensions:
- Don’t go to bed with wet hair Hair is most susceptible to damage when it is wet! Sleeping with hair that’s not properly dried is the worst thing you can do to the styling. You risk further tangling the strands and even pulling some of them out along with your own hair. We recommend blow-drying your hair: keep the blow-dryer at least 12 inches (30 centimeters) away from your head and do not use maximum temperature settings, which could cause the keratin bonds to melt. Read more about how to wash and dry hair extensions,
- Use a good hairbrush Standard brushes with massage nodules or hard plastic bristles can pull out the keratin bonds or tangle your hair at the points where the hair extensions are attached. To avoid this, we recommend purchasing a special brush for hair extensions like Janeke Mixed Bristle Brush with Nylon & Boar Bristles that gently combes the strands between your own hair and tapes/keratin bonds, or Janeke SuperBrush – a brush that easily manages any tangles and helps you to style hair using a blowdryer. A great choice for any type of hair! Read more about how to brush your hair extensions,
- Get silk scrunchies and pillowcases The best way to sleep with hair extensions is to put your hair together in a loose ponytail or braid and secure it with a silk scrunchie. Ideally, you should rest your head on a silk pillowcase as well. Read more about all the benefits of natural silk here,
- Wear silk night sleeping caps Silk caps are a great alternative to pillowcases. They will reduce the risk of tangling and hair damage.
- Use a quality hair conditioner This is one of the best ideas to protect hair extensions while sleeping! Apply conditioner to the middle and ends of your hair extensions. Try to spread it out evenly so it doesn’t end up on the bonds, tapes, or hand-tied wefts. Braid your hair carefully and go to bed. Wash the hair as usual in the morning and enjoy the beautiful look!
Do tape-in extensions slow down hair growth?
3. Steer Clear of Extensions – You might think hair extensions are a quick fix for longer locks, right? But, no. Clips and harmful adhesives also weaken your strands over time. So are there any hair extensions that don’t damage your natural hair? Of course. - Top 5 reasons why tape in hair extensions are the best hair extension method: Cost: Tape in hair extensions are the least expensive semi-permanent hair extension method available for both the cost of hair and the application.
- Why? Tape ins only take less than an hour to apply so that makes the application costs much lower.
Also, due to the structure of the tape wefts and how the wefts are applied in the hair, the maintenance costs associated with tape in hair extensions are MUCH lower than any other semi permanent method. The cost of hair for tape in hair extensions are the exact same for a good set of clip in hair extensions and the hair for tape ins are much cheaper than the cost for fusion/micro bead/ i link hair extensions.
- The construction of tape extensions are 1 inch panels of hair, they are easier to make than the individual extensions.
- Overall, the cost of tape extensions for hair and a application are MUCH lower overall compared to any other hair extension method.
- Low Maintenance: Tape in extensions are the easiest hair extension method to maintain due to their thin construction and 1.5 inch width.
It is the easiest hair extension to maintain. Most actually forget that they are wearing tape in extensions because they are just that easy to maintain. You tape it and forget it, until about 10-12 weeks when its time to move them up. Note – if you get cheaper non remy tape extensions, you will regret this! They will not last long because tape extensions are worn daily and with low quality hair, they will not last. Least Damaging: Tape in extensions are the least damaging on the market. They are very lightweight and do not pull on your own hair like other extensions do – they grow out with your own hair and do not tug or pull. Clip in extensions are actually VERY heavy and will cause bald spots if you wear them every day.
- Note: if you have fine hair, traditional clip ins are not best for you! Individual extensions (fusion, micro, i-tip etc) can be very damaging and tend to tangle more, causing you to lose hair.
- Tape in hair extensions are non-damaging and very easy to remove.
- When it comes to hair loss you do NOT want to lose hair from wearing extensions.
With you will not lose hair or experience any discomfort. This is the goal of hair extensions – damage free and comfortable! Reusable: Tape in extensions are reusable for up to a year, they are good for 3-4 applications. Being able to reuse your hair extensions is such a benefit, especially if you have had your extensions customized with a cut or color.
- Once you remove the tape extensions you clean them, add, and then re-apply them.
- That is why getting high quality tape extensions is most important.
- You want good hair and tape to last through the year, or else you will be removing your new tape extensions within a matter of 4 weeks.
- However, good quality tape extensions are reusable and this makes it worth trying.
Individual extensions are not reusable and clip extensions tend to get worn out within a matter of 6 months (depending on your wear and use). Reusing extensions is worth it especially when you pay to have them cut colored etc. The removal of tape extensions takes only 15 minutes. They are really thin and invisible! They are so flexible in your hair too – you cannot feel them when you brush over them or wash them. The best thing about tape in hair extensions compared to individual hair extensions is that when you wash and blow dry your hair they are MUCH more flexible and easier to dry and take care of.
- The individual extensions are stringy, tend to tangle, and the actual bonds are not as flexible and soft as tape extensions when it comes to washing and blow drying.
