In fact, showering can actually help to prolong your tan. When you shower, the water helps to hydrate your skin, which can prevent your tan from fading too quickly. Just be sure to avoid using any harsh soaps or scrubs, as these can strip away your tan.

Before going to a tanning salon it’s a good idea to decide whether you’d prefer to tan in your underwear or if you’d prefer your birthday suit and tan completely in the nude. This is entirely your choice, but there are two points to remember. If you’re going to wear underwear, think about your tanning lines and what they’re going to look like, and thus plan your underwear choice accordingly (you could always wear your bikini if that’s easier).
- If you’re going commando, it might be a good idea to protect your most sensitive parts, such as nipples and genitals, because the skin is more sensitive and could be more prone to burning (you definitely don’t want to burn there-ouch!).
- Eye safety Please never start a tanning session without goggles, this is so important.
Merely closing your eyes on a sunbed isn’t enough because the UV rays can still penetrate your eyes through the thin skin of your eyelids and cause serious damage to your retina and eyesight. Not just any goggles will do, and sunglasses don’t work as a suitable substitute.

- If you are taking medications or natural supplements you should research if they are capable of causing a photosensitive reaction, and adjust tanning times accordingly.

Using a tan accelerator will maximize the results of your tanning session by giving a deeper tan with less time spent on a sunbed. Amazing, right? Just make sure you use a high quality accelerator, because some brands are simply moisturizing lotions that are able to call themselves tan accelerators on the premise that moisturized skin tans better.
Although this is true, their effect is minimal, if any. A good tan accelerator that actually does what it should will contain ingredients that stimulate skin to tan faster, such as L-tyrosine, as well as ingredients that your skin needs to produce a better, deeper tan more quickly whilst combating UV-induced free radicals, such as vitamins, carotenoids, and antioxidants.
Some accelerators contain bronzer, which kick-starts your colour and results in a beautiful golden-hued tan. If you’re at a loss for which brand to go for, Carrot Sun is an excellent, high-quality brand of accelerator that contains all of the above, in addition to being gorgeously scented.
Before hitting the sunbed shop, you need to work out what your skin type is to make the most of your session. By knowing your skin type and its tanning abilities, most sunburn can be avoided altogether. Skin typing determines the amount of natural protection you have against ultraviolet light, how many sessions it will take you to establish a base tan, and how long you can be in the tanning unit each session.
Dermatologists categorize people into 6 different skin types, starting from the lightest and working up to the darkest: Skin Type 1 – Usually very white or pale, blue or green eyes, red hair and many freckles. This skin type burns very easily and tans with great difficulty.

How many times a week can I sensibly use a sunbed? People with skin type 1; children under 18 and people on certain medications that may cause photosensitivity; people with a history of skin cancer in their family should not use a sunbed at all. Moderate tanning of 2-3 sessions a week is OK for everyone else but ensure you rest the skin for a minimum of 24 hours between each session and at least 48 hours for skin type 2.

Never sunbathe outdoors on the same day you take a sunbed session. Why will some sunbed salons let me use their sunbeds for longer sessions? This depends entirely upon the type of sunbed being offered. The power and UV output can vary considerably from sunbed to sunbed.
A professional sunbed operator will advise on the correct session length, dependent upon sunbed, skin type and stage of tan development. A new regulation now requires all sunbeds to have a maximum irradiance level of 0.3W/m2 and this will mean the length of a session will need to be increased to achieve the same dosage.
Is there a link between UV exposure and skin cancer? There are two types of skin cancer – non-melanoma which can usually be easily treated. The second is malignant melanoma, which if not treated early enough can prove fatal. Some evidence points to sunburn and over-exposure to UV being one of the possible risk factors in contracting skin cancer.
- It follows, therefore, that avoiding melanomas can be helped by controlling exposure to UV – particularly in children.
- Malignant melanoma is found to be most prevalent on parts of the body not normally exposed to sunlight, suggesting that it is those areas that have to deal with intermittent, excessive doses of UV that are most vulnerable – or that UV over-exposure is not the only cause.
Controlled exposure to UV, either in sunlight or on a sunbed, is important to avoid over-exposure and sunburn What are the benefits of using a sunbed? Sunbeds offer a controlled way to tan and can provide appropriate levels of UV to ensure sufficient levels of Vitamin D are achieved and maintained (see section on Vitamin D for more on this subject).
Tanning in sunlight means the body can be subjected to different levels of UV rays, depending on the time of day, location in the world, month of the year and so on. With a sunbed, a tanning programme can be developed to ensure skin type and the type of sunbed being used, are taken into consideration to ensure that over exposure, including the possibility of burning, is avoided.
Is it true there is no such thing as a safe tan? No. Tanned skin protects against sunburn, thought to be the main cause of melanoma. If you avoid getting sunburned, the benefits of moderate sun exposure (see Vitamin D section) will far outweigh any risks.
- Is unprotected sun exposure unhealthy? Although precautions do need to be taken, regular, moderate amounts of unprotected UV exposure are absolutely necessary for good health.
- Independent scientific research has shown that whether you live in a sunny or not-so-sunny climate, but expose yourself to sun, then your subsequent increased production of Vitamin D will help lower the risk of a host of debilitating and fatal diseases including colon, breast, prostate and ovarian cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, Type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis and depression.

Tanning booths and beds can cause people to develop a rash. The itching and bumps you notice may be caused by too much UV light exposure. Your skin also could be sensitive to chemicals used to clean tanning beds or ingredients in cosmetics or lotions. Another less-than-pleasant possibility is you may have a skin infection from a bed that hasn’t been cleaned properly.
If your rash doesn’t go away, if it’s warm or tender, or if you have a fever, see a doctor. Some medications can make skin more susceptible to UV light — a rash could be one sign of this. If you’re taking any prescriptions (including birth control pills and acne treatments), avoid tanning and wear sun protection when you’re outside.
- The itching and redness is your skin’s way of saying, “Stop, don’t do this to me!” Just like exposure to the sun, tanning beds and booths can increase your risk of skin cancer, premature aging, and eye problems.
- Since a rash is probably not the kind of warm glow you’re going for, find another way to get the look you want (like using a self-tanner or body makeup).

What level tanning bed gets you the darkest?
Most of the time you walk into a salon as soon as it reaches 78 degrees outside and now you are in a mad rush to get the perfect tan for the quickly approaching summer months. The salon offers a million different beds with weird numbers referring to levels but none of this really matters because you just want to look like a beach babe ASAP.
- Sound familiar? Well I’m here to help you out and actually prepare you by knowing the difference between the levels we offer in our salon.
- Nowing how your skin reacts to each level can help you develop a deeper tan FASTER! Work smarter, not harder ladies and gents An easy way to picture the beds is to imagine them with a line right down the middle of the levels.
Levels 1-3 are considered our “Lower Level” beds. These beds are great for someone new to tanning, someone looking to maintain their current tan, or someone wanting to dive a little deeper into their tan. Lower level beds penetrate the skin on a deeper level and pull melanin to the surface of your skin. Level 1: Our lowest level bed meaning it has a lower intensity when it comes to the UV rays.This bed is perfect for someone who burns very easily as it is a great way to get started with your tanning routine! However, this bed is also amazing for someone who is looking to deepen their tan for a lasting glow. Level 2: Similar to our level 1 bed but with a little more intensity! Plus this level offers two beds in the salon allowing you more options and less of a wait. Level 2 is great for working up to higher levels but also deepening that perfect tan once you have achieved a dark color. Level 3: One of our most popular beds because it is the highest intensity of our lower level beds. This bed offers great color while also pulling from a deeper level. Level 4: The lowest of the higher level beds and probably my personal favorite This is where the beds start tanning more towards the surface of your skin and you see your color develop faster! These beds are also very spacious, and great for maintaining that perfect color! Level 5: Our only STAND UP in the salon!! I can not stress this enough you need to use the stand up. Most people run as far as they can from it because they want to lay down and relax but let me tell you, you are missing out. The stand up allows for tanning exposure that is not possible in a lay down and helps prevent awkward white areas. Bunny tails are not cute okay. Level 6: Last but definitely not least, our high pressure bed. This means it is the highest intensity bed in our salon but since it is a high pressure bed, it is also the hardest to burn in. Now that does not mean you can spend hours in it but it does offer a great tan! This bed offers an extremely dark tan in minutes, plus all the fancy bells and whistles.
Voice commands, air conditioning, multiple fans, separate facial and should bulbs, and body forming acrylic to create an amazing tanning experience! TAN TIP: Bouncing around is the BEST! Once you have worked your way up to a higher level bed it is crucial that you spend sometime in the lower level beds still.
Yes level 6 gives you bomb color in a fraction of the time but it also fades away just as fast! You need to create a balance between a deep tan from our lower levels and a dark tan from the higher levels! Talk with one of our tanning consultants to set up the perfect routine for you.
Can I tan with hairy legs?
This is such a good question, and it makes sense as to why it is one of the most popular questions women have when it comes to self tanning or even spray tanning. Can you self tan or spray tan with hairy legs? The answer is yes! I know it seems like the hair may get in the way, but it doesn’t. This is also why I only tell people to remove unwanted hair before any fake tan application, Even for men, only remove unwanted hair. You do not need to start shaving your entire body to have a good sunless tan application,
- However, there are some hair removal rules you need to know.
- Shaving If you are shaving, you need to shave 24 hours before any fake tan application.
- If for whatever reason you cannot do that, finish with cold water after shaving to close your pores.
- Have you ever had brown spots get stuck in your pores? This is from shaving or exfoliating right before a fake tan.
Don’t do this. You can shave while having a fake tan on, just wait 24 hours after your self tan or spray tan application. Waxing The same goes for waxing, you must wax 24 hours before a sunless tan. If you don’t the wax residue can pick up the fake tan solution and leave you with a dark brown spot exactly where the wax was.
This is not cute, please follow this rule. Do not wax while having any kind of fake tan on, it will remove the faux tan from that area, wait until you want your tan to come off or it is coming off. Sugaring This is a popular way to remove hair, I personally don’t use this method but I know women love it.
Sugaring actually exfoliates your skin, by removing the first layer of dead skin which is perfect before sunless tanning. I still recommend doing this 24 hours before fake tanning, as you want your pores to be closed. Do not sugar while having any kind of fake tan on, it will remove the faux tan from that area, wait until you want your tan to come off or it is coming off.
Threading If you thread to remove hair you can only do it before a fake tan application as well, and the same rule of 24 hours before to make sure your pores are closed. Do not thread while having any kind of fake tan on, it will remove the fake tan from that area, wait until you want your tan to come off.
Laser hair removal This is my personal favorite, this literally stops your hair from growing anymore. I also have really pale skin and dark hair, so when I would shave you could still see the hair. Laser hair removal was the only thing that stopped this, I mean I wouldn’t even want to wear a bikini before lasering my bikini line for this reason. Here are some tips and advice on ensuring that you get the most out of your treatment with us. • Ideally wait 2-4 hours after the spray tan as been applied before you shower – the longer you leave it the the darker the tan will develop (do not leave on for longer than 6 hours though as it may over-process) • Try not to get caught in the rain following your appointment as raindrops may distort where the tan has been applied and you may end up with small white dots where the rain has landed.
- Likewise, avoid washing your hands or feet following your treatment until the 2 hour mark has been reached.
- Try not to get too hot and sweaty immediately afterward (no gym sessions or running until after you have showered!).
- Until you shower, wear loose baggy clothes to ensure the tan can develop freely and not be rubbed off by tight waistbands or bra straps.
• Once you have showered, you will notice the bronzer washing away, leaving you looking tanned and glowing underneath. From this point on hydration is the key! Please note: the tan will continue to develop even after the shower, so do not be alarmed if you’re not as tanned as you expect to be.
- The tan will continue to develop over the next 12-24 hours.
- Eep skin well moisturised following your treatment as this will increase the longevity of the tan as well as ensuring that it fades evenly and doesn’t become patchy.
- Try and use a non-abrasive skin wash so that the tan is not stripped away by the chemicals in your soap or shower gels.
• Utilise our after-care products to extend the life and quality of your tan.
How long after tanning can you put clothes on?
Once you’ve successfully self-tanned, wait until the products have dried completely before attempting to put on any clothes. We recommend at least 10 minutes, but keep checking any problem areas, such as under the arms or behind the knees, to see how they’re drying. If you’re still tacky, it’s too early!
How long should you tan in a tanning bed for beginners?
Type 4 – If you have Type 4 skin, you can begin tanning at about four to nine minutes. Your tan will quickly develop, so you won’t have to increase your increments rapidly or go for sessions as often as other skin types. Ultimately, Type 4 skin can withstand up to 20 minutes in a bed or booth, but it is not necessary to maintain a great tan.
