In some cases, an ectopic pregnancy may lead to serious internal bleeding and prompt, accurate diagnosis helps to avoid delays in referring women for emergency surgery. The majority of women with ectopic pregnancies present with mild symptoms, which do not require immediate operation.

Pregnancy of unknown location Sometimes pregnancy cannot be seen on the scan although the urine pregnancy test is positive.

This is described as a pregnancy of unknown location (PUL). In most cases this is because miscarriage had happened before women attend for the scan. It usually takes for a couple of weeks for pregnancy hormones to clear after miscarriage which explains why the pregnancy test is still positive. Midwives and GP date you from lmp early on but will give you your official EDD from the measurements taken at your dating scan. The dating assumes a 4 week (28 day cycle) with day 1 being the first day of your last period. You conceive during ovulation, assumed to be day 14 of your cycle. So when you conceive, you’re already two weeks into your cycle. The digital tests measure from the day you conceived. Clinicians measure it from day 1 of your cycle. So if clear blue says 1-2 weeks, that means 1-2 weeks since you conceived, so technically 3-4 weeks pregnant. You may not need to see your GP at all as many areas now have self referral for maternity services. GPs don’t need to see you unless you have any medical issues, and they won’t do a test to confirm.
